Are you and your pet prepared for a major earthquake?

With the earth shaking from every corner to the next, are you prepared if it happens to us? Everyone knows that Vancouver could be hit with a major earthquake in our lifetime and your pets rely on you during a natural disaster. Below you will find a guide line of tips and reminders for when disaster strikes in our area. Please remember to adjust these tips to suit your own needs.

Please be ready! Your puppy, kitty, bird and other pets will thank you!

Tips:

·         Keep a collar, current license and up-to date ID tags on your pet at all times. Consider having your pet micro-chipped
·         Make sure your pet is comfortable being in a carrier of some sort for quick and easy transport
·         Keep an updated contact list of those who could assist your animals on your behalf if disaster strikes while you’re not home.
·         Tighten latches on birdcages and secure aquariums that are on low stands or tables.

Kit:  Make a “ready-bag” for each pet that includes:

·         Pet carrier (or pillowcase for cats & small animals), leash, a muzzle for dogs, food, potable water and medicine for at least one week
·         Bowls with lids for food and water and a manual can opener
·         Litter box and extra litter
·         A recent photo of each pet
·         Contact information for 24 hour emergency veterinary hospitals and animal shelters
·         Copy of your pet’s vaccination history and medical history
·         Portable fencing or baby gate

Remember that animals react differently under stress. Dogs and cats should be securely leashed and/or crated to make them feel more at ease.

Should your pet be lost, contact the nearest animal shelter to report your pet missing. When it is safe to return home, post “Lost Pet” posters around your neighbourhood with a current picture of your pet and your contact information.

One more note: Is your pet’s first aid kit replenished regularly? Be sure to check that all medicine, eye drops, bandages, etc. have not expired or been damaged.

Taking these precautions not only puts you at ease, but it will ensure the safety and care of your furry friend should the unthinkable happen.  I wish you a great week and happy tails . . . I mean trails!
